Sept. 11, 2023 UPDATE

Fundraising for the road repair at the Anam Chatral Sacred Site

(funds are needed before winter arrives in Tibet)

Sept. 11, 2023

Dear Vajra Sangha member,

For the past few years, the Vajra Sangha Council had requested voluntary annual donations to support the Vajra Sangha. However, for 2023 we will not be making such a request. Instead, we share this very special request, on behalf of Anam Thubten, and request your financial support in any amount.

Before winter weather descends upon Tibet, we wish to raise, from Vajra Sangha members, $10,000 USD for repairing the road that reaches the Anam Chatral sacred site in the Golok region of Tibet, which contains a stupa and a hermitage located on rugged and rural land.

Anam Chatral was a lifelong hermit and renunciate (1859-1930), and was one of  the main disciples of Dudjom Lingpa, well-known Dzogchen master in the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. He spent most of his life practicing meditation and sadhanas on the top of the sacred mountain Takyak. This site is worshiped by the people in the Golok region of Eastern Tibet as the abode of a shamanic spirit. The place he meditated, on top of the mountain, is now considered sacred due to his practice as well as being the location where he passed away.

Anam Thubten is the lineage holder of Anam Chatral, and therefore is responsible for the maintenance of this sacred site.  Erected after Anam Chatral’s death in approximately 1930, the stupa was destroyed during the cultural revolution in China in the late 1950s and then restored in 1993.  In 2020, the stupa was successfully renovated as a result of the generosity of Dharmata sangha from Malaysia, North America, and a South Korean monk, Misan Sunim.

Subsequently, with the help of many donations, a 3-room hermitage with sleeping quarters and a shrine room, was restored. The road repair funding was not included in any previous cost projections and will be needed now to complete the project before the winter weather arrives. Project workers anticipate being able to complete the road work while the pre-winter weather still permits.

We invite you to participate in offering to assist Anam Thubten to complete this humble project, which will cost $10,000 USD. All donations are made payable through the Dharmata Foundation and are tax deductible.

Donations can be made by mailing a check (drawn on a bank account in the United States). Make your check payable to Dharmata Foundation, and on the check’s memo line please write: “Anam Chatral Hermitage Site (road)”

Please mail your check to:
